When Valve showed off the box originally, people on the Steam Deck discord said "they'll have an outer box for shipping." Once devs started getting theirs, there was no indication of an outer shipping box. ReRouting Steam deck to FedEx pickup location. I received my order email last Thursday (5/5) and ordered my deck shortly after. It took until Monday night for me to receive a tracking number for FedEx. It wasn’t until Tuesday morning (PST) that my tracking number changed from label created to an active parcel.
