The dude is absolutely useless. He's just helpful for beginners in terms of determining where to go next. If you meant this guy then you're in a bit of a pickle. He drops some decent gear later on and he has a sideplot related to the firekeeper at firelink shrine. If you do end up killing him though then don't fret; there's always NG+!
