P229's were always an "A" and another letter (i.e. AA, AB, AM, etc...) with AM being the last German prefix used. The US made frames originally had a "U" at the end of the 'A and another letter' (i.e. AJU, AKU, etc...), with the U designating US made.

The "legacy slide" on the P229 has a short extractor while more recent slides have the long extractor and full height cocking serrations. Both these slides fit on German made frames. But with serial number M17E0001 to M17E0900 (from my understanding).
