I've kept the light armor, and I use conjuration, alteration, and restoration to augment my battle abilities. The difference is that my damage is dependent on the enemy. A Mage in clothing. Hit em with my mace. A nord warrior in heavy armor. I've recently acquired summon swarm A heavy armor warrior that's anything but a nord.
If you're using alteration magic, robes may be better since you can get the mage armor perks, which strengthen the flesh spells if you aren't wearing armor. Robes in general also have higher magic reductions than you find on armor, or can enchant yourself without exploits. If you arent using alteration, then wearing some armor can be more useful.
