Playing older formats is dirt cheap. WotC was a different company back then. It was an even better company back in like 2000. Even meta "Advanced Format" Yu-Gi-Oh is pretty cheap compared to Modern, which is probably its closest analogue. You're talking decks averaging $200-$400 instead of $1000. We got the Hobbits and Elves commander decks on a whim and have been having a blast with them. It feels more fair/forgiving than standard. And not having any copies makes it way more exciting.
