My DEF gauge would get stuck at 1/2 a tank for a few thousand miles and then I would get a low DEF warning and fill up. Dealer replaced the DEF tank. Currently at 1/2 tank DEF on the gauge with a box of DEF in waiting in the bed of the truck trying to see if I can burn the gauge down from 1/2 to 1/8th. Not sure yet if the issue is fixed yet or not.

Whether that should work for you depends on your DEF tank size. If you have an approx. 5 gallon tank and the level was low enough to trigger the "check DEF" light, then a 2.5 gallon tank should not even come close to filling it up.
