I have the Kimber Compact which has the same captured spring/guide rod assembly. Use the take-down tool and disassembly and clean the spring/guide rod as one assembly. There is no reason to take it apart if you don't need to. My gun has 2000 rounds through it and I've not felt any need to change the spring yet.
