But it opens fine if I use the inside release button, or the key fob. Is it just a matter of the contacts being dirty inside the membrane of the ...4.-. Once you unplug it try locking the doors and see if it beeps.

I tried with the lock in both positions, but there was more play when the key hole was horizontal (locked) so I wrongly assumed that was unlocked. Anyway, Unlocked is key-hole vertical.
