Removing the heater hose quick-connect couplers at the firewall is a Grade-A pain in the butt. I bought the removal tools (Lisle brand about $35.00) and the tools at least made it possible (no way without them), but was still fussy. When a loss of coolant is not obvious, I use a pressure tester and pump up the system.
When I saw the leaking RH disconnect, I bought both new hoses. After replacing, it still leaked on the RH hose. So I checked the o-ring in both the old and new connectors and looked for damage on the heater core nipples. Everything looks to be in perfect condition. I would take a shop rag, bunch it up around the hose where it runs over the connector then take a set of pliers or channel locks, grab the hose where it fits over the connector and twist it to break the seal.
