I tell all D-104 owners that you need to replace the single electrolytic capacitor on the amp board due to the age of these mics. If that cap is dried out, the mic will sound like crap and people will blame the element and that may not be bad. Easy fix and the cap is just a buck or two. (amplified D-104s) Sonar.

I had some old hand mics, and tried them in my D104. Unfortunately, the units I had were dead. Boo! I have been told they sound great, though. The kit looks nice. I have a Heil HC-5 around here somewhere that I used in a dead head D104, and it worked really well.Original Circuit (Amplified D-104) Figure 1. As I recall, the Heathkit HDP-121A required a Mic Level setting of 9-10 o'clock.... whereas the D-104 required a setting of 12-1:00 o'clock position setting. No issues with it... just need to remember to adjust it a bit higher when you decide to switch mics. The HW-101 handled either mic very well.

Astatic made a several different low z heads for the G, UG, T-UG stands. Those will generally be in a bullet shape like the DN-50. I just finished one D104 project where i gutted the head and replaced it with a low z dynamic element from a junky Cobra CA73 hand mic.
