The digital test does the reading for you typically. You plug the stick into the test then pee stream for 5secs or dip for 15secs. You leave for 5mins or until the reading face comes up. You can read it manually once you eject the stick. That's if using these ones.

Start too early, and you will get way too many empty circles/flashing smilies. Start too late and it goes straight to static. TBH, I would recommend you save your money and get the cheap easy@home strips from Amazon - you can upload the photos of the results in a few apps (free) that interpret them for you and tell you high, low or peak fertility.

I was convinced I had already ovulated - temping, app etc, but they kept flashing smileys so we kept going! Turns out they were right!

You're supposed to use it once around maybe CD6 to get a baseline for estrogen. Then if you used it a couple days before ovulation, you'd get the blinking smiley because your estrogen was higher than the first time. I'm thinking you skipped the blinking phase because it didn't have a baseline. Which is fine. Solid smiley is good!
