In 1837, Alexander McGregor established a ferry across the Mississippi River. McGregor's Landing was located at the site of the town that now bears his name. The Pikes Peak area was owned by McGregor, and, as a favorite family picnic spot, it was protected from being logged for firewood to feed the hungry riverboat boilers.
